Gillian Welch – The Harrow & The Harvest (Warners)
This album took eight years, apparently, and yet all of the tracks could have come from the last couple of Welch albums. But that’s as it should be – you don’t come to the music of Welch and Rawlings looking for innovation. You come for fresh takes on country-folk staples – heartbreaking harmonies, unshowy but breathtaking guitar work, a deep vein of melancholy, simple tales told with insight and compassion. And The Harrow & The Harvest has all those things to spare.
