A Winged Victory For The Sullen – s/t (Erased Tapes)
mp3: A Winged Victory For The Sullen – Requiem For The Static King Pt 2
Allegedly formed at one of the last ever Sparklehorse shows, AWVFTS overcome a dreadful, emo band name* by producing something totally remarkable. You’ll find this music at some washed out intersection of Budd / Eno / Richter ambience, Rachels / Shipping News chamber-post-rock and the ‘windy minimalism’** of Labradford / Stars Of The Lid (with whom one of the duo has worked). Slow, mournful drones, delicate piano, cellos and atmosphere and a deep deep melancholy, as is appropriate for an album dedicated to the memory of Mark Linkous (Requiem For The Static King is an explicit tribute – it was the name of Sparklehorse’s studio).
Nothing much happens on this album, beautifully.

* and not even a good emo band name like Bring Me The Horizon or I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness

I thought the name was a self effacing gag aimed at the portentousness of all that post-rock/classical palaver like godspeed you mount zion and such…
