Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat – Everything’s Getting Older (Chemikal Underground)
I was never a massive Arab Strap fan – I appreciated what they were doing, I guess, and Moffat‘s seedy miserabilism was great, but the music never did much for me. Now he’s teamed up with multi-instrumentalist Bill Wells, Scots jazz royalty / sophisticated indie go-to guy and all-round top bloke. His lovely, melancholy piano (alongside strings, programmed beats, acoustic bass and the like) is a far more satisfying backing for Moffat’s musings on fucking and fighting and death. It’s not the most varied album you’re going to hear this year, but it’s a very fine one.
(by the way, if you fancy reading the brilliant rantings of a drunk Scottish lech at 4am on a Wednesday, follow Moffat on Twitter and see what he thinks of Rihanna, Adele and the rest).
