What I said about expectations (see Freedom) cuts both ways. I had Carol Birch’s Jamrach’s Menagerie pegged as a ‘tube book’, if you know what I mean, and figured it would be diverting enough – Ailsa read it, liked it.

I started it yesterday and I’ve finished it already. 350 pages in a day. It’s been a while since I’ve done that.

Beautifully, vividly written, like a Boys Own seafaring adventure at first, but then truly awful. As awful as almost anything I’ve read save perhaps Johnny Got His Gun. And then a love story, of a sort. All totally evocative and exciting and gutwrenching.

You should read it.
