“Proper” music journalism is full of bullshit false polarities – Oasis vs Blur, Stones vs Beatles. So here’s mine – Frontier Ruckus vs Arcade Fire. Both trade on memory and nostalgia for much of their work, but here’s why Frontier Ruckus are absolutely wonderful and Arcade Fire have sucked since the first album. Frontier Ruckus employ nuance and heavy, gorgeous melancholy and small sweet details rather than bombast and anthems and veins standing out on necks. Frontier Ruckus lack “Springsteen“, maybe. Good.

Perhaps not quite as absorbing as their untouchably lovely debut, this 2nd Frontier Ruckus album is still rich and enveloping and beguiling. Ultra-literate, musically intricate, it’s headphone music (a bus journey through the Northumberland countryside just before the snow hit was when Deadmalls got under my skin, despite having had it for months). Saws and dobros and harmonies and somebody else’s memories described so vividly they feel like your own.

Live, they’re phenomenal too, joyous even.

If they play your town, let them sleep on  your floor. I did and they were great company.
