download Phosphorescent – The Mermaid Parade

I hadn’t heard of Matthew Houck or Phosphorescent before this album, despite him sticking out a few well received albums over the last decade, including a tribute to Willie Nelson. But this just leapt out of the speakers and has been played to death ever since. It’s country, sorta, but country that’s all stretched out. Gram’s cosmic American music, maybe. A couple of tracks almost sound to me like how Jason Pierce probably thinks Spiritualized sound (but they don’t). The opener is a bit of red herring, an infectious, horn-driven FM country rock hit from a better, lovelier universe. Hej I’m Light is the killer, 4 1/2 minutes of almost chanted country gospel that sounds like deserts and sunsets and strange goings on in the mesas. But the whole album is utterly singular, totally off kilter and strange in all the best ways.

So, yeh. Country. Sorta.

buy it.
