National Independent Record Store Day. It’s not the worst idea ever, quite. But when there’s a big noise in the press about an event which seems largely to create big ebay demand for vinyl releases as unavailable to kids in Cornwall as limited edition releases ever were, what does it prove?
A quick glance at ebay and the limited vinyl release of The Flaming Lips’ Dark Side of the Moon is already – less than 12 hours after the shops shut their doors – going for £250 + on ebay. Maybe I’m naive in being surprised by this, but it does, IMO, seem to pull the rug out from under the whole venture. For shops supposedly representing an “alternative”, a place to find expertise and love and a non-corporate approach, knocking out limited editions to vultures willing to put the time in waiting in apparently absurd queues seems self-defeating. Or something..
And for the record, it’s shit.
