The Gravity Of The Situation

after a couple of days of uncertainty, it’s been confirmed that Vic Chesnutt died on Christmas Day after a suicide attempt left him in a coma.

I didn’t like everything he put out, but respected his refusal to compromise and loved some of his albums – Is The Actor Happy? in particular.

While his life has been plagued with personal difficulties, above and beyond being left a paraplegic after a teenage carcrash, it seems that the US medical system played its part in the distress that led to this – despite having insurance he was being screwed by the system for tens of thousands of dollars he just didn’t have.

Chesnutt was entering a new stage of his career in 2009 – new label, new band, new albums – so it seems particularly sad to lose him just as, perhaps, things were looking up.

RIP Vic.
