Everyone else in the house has gone sledding, leaving the shitty-limbed alone with a bottle of rum. But that means you don’t have to wait until tomorrow for the number 6 entry…
Number 6: The Bronx – Mariachi El Bronx
A decent but not really remarkable West Coast hardcore band decide to make an “authentic” mariachi album? Worst idea ever.
Except, of course, it’s bloody great. It’s done with a sincere love of the music, some excellent mariachi musicians (including a woman a guitaron which I think is actually bigger than her) and, most important, some wonderful, wonderful songs. Everyone I’ve played this to has loved it, despite sharing the same initial reservations I had.
Mariachi El Bronx was also one of a handful of gigs I made it to this year, and despite problems (Islington Academy is as shit as its curfew, and the set was necessarily short), it was a top gig with a great (although spectacularly drunken) atmosphere.
Feliz Navidad, muchachos.
