Into the top 10 then. I’d like to assure you that none of these final ten entries have been cooked up by some bogus Facebook campaign in order to “stick it to the man”.
Number 1o: The Unthanks – Here’s The Tender Coming
This isn’t the place to go into the coming and goings and politics of what must have been a confusing couple of years for the Unthank sisters. But I will say that I think something was lost with Belinda leaving – the songs she wrote were among the best they had, and live she was a crucial part of the mix. But it’s not all bad – the new, greatly expanded line-up may diminish some of the more fragile qualities the artists formerly known as the Winterset may have had, but on the flipside it’s given them new colours to play with and that has paid off on a lot of these new songs. (It’s also good to see Becky get a kind of implicit equal billing). I’ve also not seen this line-up play out and I’m intrigued how it will work – there was something special about just the four of them up there, but adding lots of strings and the like might give them a new power. We’ll see in 2010.
Anyway, the album’s lovely (even if it did make me mutter “Shelleyan Orphan” at one point) and I’m glad they resolved whatever troubles they were having.
Folk you, I won’t do what you tell me.
