How could I not love Art Brut? Wry, funny, honest, kitchen sink songs written and sung by a guy who went to Sunday school with my sister and calls himself Eddie Argos.

Art Brut get written off as a joke band, a second generation Half Man Half Biscuit. There’s two problems with this:

1) Half Man Half Biscuit are great, and not just a joke band. Although humour is paramount in what they do (it’s certainly not the bloody music), there’s a real pain and anger to a lot of Nigel’s lyrics that the casual doubter would miss.
2) Art Brut are great, and not just a joke band either, but in their case the music is very very good (scratchy, indie, Fall-esque, not particularly original but that’s not the point) and Eddie seems to put of lot of his own frustration and insights and disappointment into songs which play as gags but have much more going on.

I still haven’t got round to seeing them live, but Eddie did come up to me (at a Half Man Half Biscuit gig, ironically) and ask if he used to go to Sunday School with my sister….

The new album is a peach, not that different from the first one, but that’s fine. The track I’ve chosen was the first single from it, and as fair a summary of what they’re about as anything else.
