Took me a while to properly get round to The Mekons. I loved the idea of them. I remembered seeing this video on that legendary Carry On Disarming compilation (that my mate Nick put together, it turns out.)
But a lot of it seemed too shambling, too amateur. I liked fellow travellers Chumbawamba a lot more. (Still got love for Chumbawamba).
I even had some art by Jon Langford (a painting on wood of Johnny Cash and Dylan Thomas, a 40th birthday present and a cherished thing) before I owned a Mekons record. Jon’s art is absolutely astonishing, paintings on old wood of ghosts of American astronauts, forgotten country heroes, boxers and footballers and friends and enemies.
But a boy can be wrong, right? Not long ago, something just clicked. And clicked and clicked and clicked.
The Mekons have been punk and rock and country and folk. But The Mekons ARE rock’n'roll, they were born in the belly of rock’n'roll.
